In prior tech corners we’ve spent some time discussing Cyber Security, Online Threats, the unfortunate risks residing on the internet, and how to protect yourself on the web.
So, what happens if you weren’t protected, and your information was compromised? You may have received an alert from your credit agency that your information has been found on the Dark Web. What is the dark web and why is it so dangerous? Why do criminals want your information and what is so valuable about it?
Let’s quickly discuss the dark web and what it is. The dark web is a part of the World Wide Web that is only accessible through special software, allowing users and operators to remain anonymous and untraceable.
The dark web is similar to how a regular user would go to Google or Yahoo and search for something on the internet, except, it is used by Cyber Criminals searching for compromised information and is a collection of options and tools for them to retrieve this info.
Some common information available to criminals on the dark web are:
- Personal Data
- Financial Data
- Online account logins
- Medical history and data
- Confidential information
- Personal Identifications
The cyber criminals pay a small fee, similar to a subscription-based service, to have stolen data readily available to them for immediate usage.
If you have found or been notified by a credit agency that your information has been found on the dark web, here are some recommended courses of actions.
- Change your online passwords, do not use any old passwords that may be in the data breach.
